Stefan and Katherine Transcripts Page 2

Another day, Stefan enters a sleeping Katherine’s room.

He has a fantasy. Anyhow, as he prepares to leave he hears Katherine say "Don’t go."

S:" You’re awake."

K:" How long have you been here?"

S:" Just a little while. I tried to come by earlier but I’ve been so..busy." (
Stefan was heeding Alexis’ advice about keeping his distance. Causing Katherine much stress)

S:" How are you doing?"

K:" I’ve been better. A sharp pain in my legs woke me up."

S:" Did you say you had a pain in your legs?"

Katherine realizes the meaning. "Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God. I can feel my legs, I can feel my legs."

S:" NO, no what are you doing?" as Katherine starts to get out of bed.

K:" I really think I can walk."

S:" No, no we should get a doctor."

K:" No don’t please, please. I want to enjoy this moment alone with you. It’s because of you isn’t it? The way you look at me. You willed this."

S:" Yes" (ever so humble:) K:" Help me Stefan." As she reaches her hand out to his. Stefan takes it and puts his arm around her waist to help her stand.

S:" Easy, easy..You can walk." K:" Because of you." Katherine is ecstatic and has the lovelight in her eyes. She rests her head and hand on his chest.

Stefan snaps back to reality seeing only a sleeping Katherine. Saddened and overwhelmed with guilt he leaves. Stefan runs into Miranda in the nurses station. She gives him a frightened and perplexing look. (This could have been a good story. With Miranda as Natasha. But Noooo she interfered with the SIDAR.)

Sometime later Katherine wakes up to a surprise. "Oh my God, my God. I think I can feel my legs. I can feel my legs." She starts rubbing them (Mighty fine legs they are too:) Just then Stefan enters the outer room and sees Katherine through the glass. Katherine and Stefan look at one another and share a smile. Katherine gives a shrug and Stefan enters the room.

S:" I just uh. Came by to say hello."

K:" I’m glad you did. You may be the one person in the world I can tell this to."

S:" You want to confide in me?"

K:" Exactly. A confidence. But you can’t tell a soul."

S:" I’ll carry it to my grave. I promise."
K:" Earlier, I’m almost positive I felt something in my legs."

S:" Well that’s, that’s wonderful."

K:" If it’s true. But what if it’s just my imagination. You know sometimes when you want something so badly it becomes real."

S:" And you haven’t told anyone?"

K:" Not until I’m sure.. I don’t want everyone hovering over me, getting their hopes up for nothing. But I couldn’t keep it to myself and I realized that you are the one I wanted to share it with. And then there you were. I mean how do you know exactly when I need you?"

S:" A connection? Fate?"

K:" Fate?"

S:" Is that something you believe in?"

K:" I’m not sure. I suppose anything is possible."

S:" I suppose so."

Stefan continues to be harangued by Alexis about his interest in Katherine.

Barbara finds out Stefan has been sending flowers to Kat, she’s more worried about Luke though. Who is the main suspect in the shooting. Stefan assuages her fears and throws a dinner party, inviting Tom and Felicia. Tom tries to play private dick and Felicia wonders why Stefan has no mirrors.

Meanwhile Katherine is upset that her mysterious friend hasn’t visited.

Nurse:" Good news. I’m not here to take blood."

K:" Have you seen that man? He where’s mostly black, around the hospital. He’s come to visit me a couple of times."

N:" I don’t know who you mean."

K:" he uh..nevermind." Katherine has the flowers removed from her room.

Stefan assures Alexis he hasn’t forgotten his priorities. Katherine won’t cooperate with Doc. Tony about physical therapy.

After the dinner party Stefan ignores Alexis’ advice and takes a white rose with him to the hospital. He stands outside as Mac proposes to Katherine and she turns him down.

After Mac leaves, Stefan pockets the rose and enters Katherine’s room. She is crying and doesn’t notice his presence at first.

S:" Katherine."

K:" It’s you."

S:" Is that good?"

K:" You have no idea. I think you’re the only person I can tolerate tonight."

She reaches out her hand. Stefan takes it in his and strokes it with the other.

K:" Thank you for coming."

S:" It’s my pleasure. I look forward to these visits. "

K:" I can’t imagine why. Sick people always made me nervous. It’s a struggle for me to see people in the hospital. I guess I was afraid it might happen to me."

S:" I’m sorry."

K:" Don’t be. That’s what makes everybody else’s visits so hard. Being brave for them. Makes me so tired."

S:" Then you should rest."

K:" I want to. But it never seems to get dark. I don’t want to complain. I don’t need to complain when you’re here."

S:" Why is that."

K:" I don’t know. We’re incomparable (?) somehow."

S:" Knowing that makes these visits even more worthwhile."

Katherine let’s out a slight moan. S:" Are you in pain?"

K:" No. I’m just so tired. I wish I could sleep."

S:" Did you ever try visualizing a place that gives you peace. Sometimes when I do that, my body follows my imagination. Next thing I know it’s morning."

K:" Hmm. I wonder if that would work for me?"
S:" Close your eyes."
She does.

S" Imagine yourself in a forest. The summer air is hot, the sky is bright. But in the forest it’s cool and green. It’s quiet, that stillness of old trees. The only sound you hear is a stream winding it’s way over the rocks., fallen branches." Stefan still holding her hand gently caresses it with the other. Katherine is sleeping peacefully.

Katherine remembering Stefan’s visit and relaxation exercise, is happy for the first time since entering the hospital.

Bobbie enters.
B: "Good morning."
K: "It is isn’t it."
B: "Well that’s what I call an attitude adjustment. What happened?"
K: "There’s been a lot of positive energy around me lately. I guess it sort of rubbed off."
B: "You mean Mac."
K: "Mac’s an incredible human being. But I’ve also met a new friend." Bobbie laughs (and also seems to be flaunting that huge diamond ring throughout)
B: "Around here? You’re good."
K: "He works the night shift and he’s been very supportive."
B: "Oh. What’s his name?"
K: "I haven’t any idea."
B: "Oh. Want me to find out?"
K: "No. I want to keep it a mystery. For now anyway."
B: "How come?"
K: "It keeps our connection pure."
B: "Oh ok. Sounds romantic. How are your legs?"
K: "Same."
B: "Hmm. You know the word I’m getting from therapy is that you’re not doing much to change that."
K: "You know Bobbie. I just don’t see the point, ‘cause it all may be for nothing."
B: "Well that’s true but it’s still better than just lying here doing nothing on your own behalf."
K: "All right. I’ll give it my all next time."

Stefan and Alexis at the nurses station.
S: "How did it go with Kevin?"
A: "Not bad. He handled it surprisingly well. How’s Katherine?"
S: "Not well actually. But I have high hopes that’s about to change."
A: "I understand that you called Anna Seberg?"
S: "Yes I did. She’s with her now."
A: "Do you have any idea how upset the doctors at this hospital are going to be?"
S: "I’m not here to win any popularity contests." Brushing past her.
A: "That’s obvious."
Stefan in a harsh whisper "I shot an innocent woman."
A: "It was an accident."
S: "That doesn’t change the fact that she might be paralyzed for the rest of her life because of me."
A: "How well do you know her?"
S: "Meaning what?"
A: "Are you emotionally involved with her?"
S: "Your time is better served bailing this hospital out of it’s numerous legal difficulties. You leave Katherine Bell to me."
Later Stefan and Alexis are talking to Dr. Seberg outside Katherine’s room. Miranda sneaks into the room behind them.
M: "Hey, ready for visitors? Uhm, was Stefan Cassadine just in here to see you?"
K: "No. You know I’ve never met the man why?"
M: "Oh, I thought I saw him standing in the hall."
K: "Oh that’s strange isn’t it?"
Katherine is thinking about Stefan and cries herself to sleep.
She has a dream. She is dressed in a white negligee and looks like an angel (a sexy one) In the dream she sees the man in black’s hand reach out to her. Which she readily accepts with her own.

Alexis enters Stefan’s office at GH.

A: "Hi Stefan, I’ve come to tell you that, that item you were waiting for has arrived. So we can set up the meeting with Kevin whenever you want to."
S: "Thank you."
A: "I also want you to know that I am very well aware of the fact that I have been riding you very hard about Katherine Bell lately."
S: "Ad naseum."
A: "No kidding. I’m done, I’m finished, you’re on your own. You’re a big boy, you can make your own mistakes."
S: "You were right you know." Alexis is taken aback.
A: "I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you."
S: "Don’t gloat Alexis."
A: "Oh please, just say it one more time." Stefan gives an amusing ‘oh brother’ look.
S: "You were right. If I don’t get my act together, I could jeopardize everything we have set in motion."
Alexis gives him ‘I told you so’ look.
S: "Arrange the meeting with Dr. Collins. I’ll be at Wyndemere in one hour."
A: "Good..good." Alexis watches him go and nods. Thinking the matter is resolved.

Lucy visits Katherine and is disturbed by her depressed attitude.
L: "Is that what this is about you’re in pain?"
K: "Pain? No, no pain. Is there snow in the forecast tonight."
L: "Snow? I don’t know. Why would I know that?"
K: "You were just outside. What was it like?"
L: "It was chilly and brisk, kinda windy and..just like any other day. Why are we discussing the weather?"
K: "I miss it. It’s always the same in here. Sort of like living in a biosphere or something. I mean that’s ok, I just wonder what the weathers like sometimes."
L: "Katherine you’ve got to snap out of this. You’re no fun. What the hell is wrong with you? Snap out of it please." Katherine is silent.
Stefan met with Kevin which was interesting but since TPTB dropped it. I’ll skip it.

Doc. Tony enters Katherine’s room.
T: "Sorry."
K: "Don’t apologize. Doctors have emergencies with patients they can actually help."
T: "You know Katherine, I don’t like that tone in your voice, and I wish like hell that Stefan Cassadine in all his glorious arrogance hadn’t taken it upon himself to bring in Dr. Seberg."
K: "He meant well."
T: "But it doesn’t count for much if it derails your recovery. That’s not going to happen right?"

Nikolas arrives outside the door bearing flowers and overhears the rest of the conversation.

K: "I’m not going to miss any more physical therapy appointments."
T: "That’s what I wanted to hear."
K: "Because there aren’t going to be anymore. I want you to find me a nurse who can take care of my basic needs."
T: "Katherine."
K: "I’ve made my decision Tony. I want to go home."
T: "You want to conduct your recovery at home?"
K: "Physical therapy can’t help me. I get that now. This is who I am and I accept that. I wish everybody else would too. I want to hire a nurse to take care of my needs. That means no physical therapy."
T: "Katherine."
K: "This is my decision and I’m asking you to respect that."
T: "Well I can’t do that."
K: "All right, then don’t. Just arrange for my release from the hospital as soon as possible."

Nikolas leaves in a huff.

Nikolas returns to Wyndemere and tells Stefan and Bobbie that Katherine has given
up. (Transcribed by Alia.)

Stefan uses the pretense of having a meeting with a GH accountant. To go see
Katherine.

Setting: Stefan comes to Katherine’s hospital room to convince her not
to give up hope of walking.

Scene 1
Katherine: (Katherine hears a knocking)I told you I didn’t want to be
disturbed... (Stefan enters the room)

Scene 2
S: It’s really too late for visitors, I know.

K: No, please come in, I was worried I’d seen the last of you.

S: Well, you.., you needed rest and you had other visitors it seemed
best to stay away.

K: I’m glad you changed your mind.

S: I didn’t really, the driving’s bad, getting worse, even walking’s
tricky. It’s becoming a city of shut-ins. If I had to be somewhere
unable to leave, I wanted it to be here with you.

Scene 3
K: Then it’s snowing out; it’s too dark to tell.

S: No, no, you can feel ice in the air though, the winds roaring down in
a unbroken sweep across the lake, it stings.

K: Weather seems like something that happens to other people.

S: Do you have family here?

K: That’s funny, the nurses keep asking me the same question, I think
they’re worried who’s going to take me off their hands, but no, I don’t
have a family in Port Charles. Haven’t you ever just wanted to start
over some place where people knew nothing about you except what you
told them.

S: I grew up wanting nothing else, never became possible for me though.

K: Well, it’s now in this room.

S: True.

K: My mother was a cook on a private estate and everybody was so careful
not to call her a servant that I knew there was something wrong with the
word. I even scolded her if I heard her use it herself, but she was
very proud to be depended on by my...the family she worked for. She was
very proud of her skill and the kitchen she scrubbed so clean her hands
bled. But I could only see that life in the front part of the house was
better. I was ashamed of her, now I’m ashamed of myself for treating
her like that. I guess that’s lazy too.

S: Well, it all sounds like a very normal upbringing to me.

K: Does it? Well, now there’s a thought, I could be normal.

S: I was ashamed of my mother too, but for good reason, and the feeling
was mutual. She thought I was timid and weak, her idea of manhood was
my brother who was basically a charismatic thug. I felt superior to
them, I’m sure that I was then, but circumstances changed, so did I.
You might say I inherited the family business, it wasn’t something that
I wanted but there was no one else, and I know I could do a better job
of it than they did.

K: I’m sure you have.

S: No, but washing my hands of it isn’t a possibility anymore.

K: I’m always amazed at people who do difficult things, I’ve never been
in a situation where I couldn’t wash my hands of. You can do that when
you’re pretty, people let you . It’s mostly all I ever was--pretty. I
guess I’m going to have to think of something else to be now, won’t I?

Scene 4
K: you know when I was a girl my mother used to do all of her baking at
night. She was sort of like an artist you know, she needed her quiet
and concentration. There would be the most incredible smells coming from
the kitchen that it would keep me awake and I’d wait until she’d went
to bed and then I’d sneak down there and just take a little corner from
the last thing she was working on or scoop off the icing with my
fingers just to spread it all out again so it looked untouched, that is
public relations. I’m glad you don’t think my silly little stories are
boring.

S: You’re anything but dull.

K: I’m sure you could find a difference of opinion about that. Why do I
fell like I can tell you anything?

S: I don’t know, I feel incautious with you too, that’s rare for me.

K: It’s almost as if I’d known you before, even from the first time I
met you, you just seemed so familiar. (Katherine’s plate drops and makes
a sound like a gun shot, she flashes back to the shooting and the
shooter’s eyes)

S: I’ll get it.

Scene 5
S: Katherine, are you alright?

K: I wonder if I’m going to be like a shell shocked solider, every time
I hear a loud noise it’s going to take me back to that night.

S: Well, it must be very painful for you to remember?

K: No, not really, I hear the shot, I begin to see a face and then my
mind just looks away.

S: Well, did the doctors say that your memory won’t come back?

K: Maybe it hasn’t because I don’t want it to. Does that sound
strange? I’m sure people think that I’m just lying here racking my
brain trying to think of anything that could help catch the person that
did this to me. But why would I even want to think it? Only a
masochist would want to keep reliving the worst moment of her live. Do
you know Luke Spencer? I mean if you live here you’ve probably heard of
him.

S: Yes.

K: They say it was his gun, they say the police are out looking for him,
I hope they never find him if it’s true, I wouldn’t want to have to see
him.

S: What about justice? Shouldn’t the person who did this to you be
punished?

K: If it was Luke, I’m sure he thought he was punishing someone else. I
don’t think that people are very good with justice, they always seem to
get it wrong. I think when justice comes, it looks more like a mistake,
like what happened to me. I mean how do I know that I’m not being
punished for being a shallow and greedy, and treating my mother more
like a servant than the people that paid her.

S: No, no, no Katherine--

K: Well, if it were, it would certainly be the perfect penalty. I’m not
cut out to triumph over adversity, all I seem to be able to do is just
to try to wish it away, to some how smooth it over. I’ve played at
being helpless enough times, and I never was. Isn’t that justice?
(Stefan reaches over and holds Katherine’s hand)

Scene 6
(Stefan consoles a crying Katherine in his arms)

Scene 7
S: Is that better?

K: Maybe I just needed somebody to hold me. That’s not true, I needed
you to hold me. There’s something I can’t tell anybody else.

S: What?

K: It my own fault that I’ll never walk again.

Scene 8
K: (Stefan holding Katherine’s face) The nerves in my spine are
compressed not severed, I’ve heard them say it a million times, Tony
Jones believes that if I work hard enough at physical therapy that I can
learn to walk again. This is the part where you’re suppose to jump in
and say if I try again.

S: Obviously you don’t agree.

K: I know better, I have never succeeded at anything in my life. I, I
made myself up, my cloth, the jewelry, this ring, I mean how ridicules
is it to wear a big diamond ring in the hospital.

S: Let me see if I understand this, you’ll never walk again because
it’s up to you and you’re incapable of achieving anything independently.

K: Very well put, with not even a smidgen of pity. For that I thank
you.

S: I find it very difficult to pity one of the most beautiful women I
have ever met and one of the bravest. You know, I have never come here
without seeing you smile, that’s courage. I’ve seen you carry the
burden of your friends’ sympathy and your doctor’s diagnosis, that’s
strength. You were born with nothing but you’re a wealthy woman, that’s
determination. If you are your own creation, create yourself again. A
cook’s daughter who can buy herself diamonds can learn to walk, she only
has to want it badly enough.

Scene 9
S: Why are you alive?

K: Good question?

S: It wasn’t a rhetorical question. When you were brought into the
emergency room you weren’t expected to live, and yet you survived two
difficult surgeries in less than a month. How?

K: I had good doctors.

S: You had no part in it? Your will, your strength, you didn’t struggle
to live?

K: Of course I did.

S: Exactly, because you are too vital to die and you’re too strong to
give up.

K: I already have, you must not be listening.

Scene 10
K: I can’t fool anyone into making me walk again, I have to do it on my
own and I don’t have the strength.

S: Maybe not the first time or the second time but what about the fifth
or the tenth, the principal’s the same, lose the battle win the war. A
girl born with nothing has millions. However you accomplished it, you
achieved your goal. I don’t want to jeopardize our friendship with
expectations, but I believe that you can walk if you’re willing to
fight. So FIGHT!

Scene 11
S: Oh my goodness, it’s almost morning.

K: Could you maybe open the blinds? I love to see the sun come up.

S: My pleasure. (Stefan opens the blinds and looks out) You have a nice
view of the park. Trees are loaded with ice, when the light touches
them it’ll look as if they’re covered in diamonds.

K: It’s like Serenity when I was growing up, when there was a hard
freeze. Would you carry me to the window, I, I’d love to see it.

S: I’d be happy to. Swing your legs around.

K: I can’t do that.

S: Yes you can.

K: Please don’t do this. (Katherine proceeds to swing her leg over with
difficulty) I did it.

S: I thought you might. (Stefan carries Katherine to the window)

Scene 12
S: Soon you’ll be able to walk to this window by yourself.

K: Look at that one tree down there, it’s like it’s on fire, covered
with rubies not diamonds, it’s so beautiful.

S: (Stefan looking at Katherine) Beautiful! (Katherine looks back)

Scene 13
S: You want me to put you down?

K: No, not yet.

Scene 14
K: I am enjoying the view but I don’t want to break your back.

S: You’re really no burden. (Stefan starts to put Katherine down)

K: You know something, for the first time, I’m really starting to see
that’s a possibly, not being a burden to anybody, not even myself. I
just want to tell you, I want to thank you for going to so much trouble
for me.

S: I consider it a honer. What’s funny?

K: You, you’re, you’re so formal, so elegant.

S: Well, curse of upbringing, perhaps I’ll work on loosening up a bit.

K: No, I like you this way, sort of old world, but it doesn’t put me
off.

S: I’m glad.

K: You know growing up the way I did, I always felt that manners were a
veneer, but you had to have them if you wanted to fit in the right
society, but it was an act. You treat me with manners that come from
the inside, like out of respect. If the whole world treated each other
like that...

S: Virtually nothing would get done.

K: (laughs) That’s what I like about you, you can laugh about yourself,
it makes me laugh about myself too, which God knows I need if I’m ever
going to get out of here and you have really made that seem like a
possibility.

Scene 15
S: If I’ve had the slightest positive influence, I’m very happy.
K: It really was an amazing sight, the icy tree and the sunrise.

S: Shall I carry you back?

K: No, the sun’s up now and I know that tree is there, the next time I’m
up at that window I want to be standing and I want you there with me.

Scene 16
S: Well, perhaps you should rest.

K: I haven’t pulled an all nighter since college. And that was to cram
not to cry my eyes out.

S: You permitted yourself some honest despair and you got to the other
side.

K: I’m still trying to understand how. All I know is it has every thing
to do with you. It’s strange, everybody has come by here with a pep
talk for me since I was hurt, Mac, Miranda, that well meaning woman in
the wheel chair, even Robin has called several times, Robin is Mac’s
niece, she’s HIV positive, she has a thoroughly wonderful attitude, I
tried to be wonderful, I just couldn’t manage it.

S: That’s a matter of opinion.

K: Why could you get through to me when nobody else could? Why did you
make me begin to believe that I could walk again because suddenly I do.

Scene 17
S: You need to understand that I didn’t do anything at all, I merely
said what I believed.

K: Why did I believe you? I think I know, all the others tried to coax
and cajole me and they did just about everything but read me the little
engine that could, but I couldn’t and I could read the disappointment in
their eyes, but you were so matter of fact that I felt what you said was
real, I knew that you weren’t handling me. I loathe being handled. What
ever you did--

S: Whatever I did you are giving me far too much credit and yourself
none at all.

K: That’s because I haven’t done anything yet, but I will, I promise you
that. I’m going to go to those physical therapy appointments and I’m
going to slap these flabby muscles into shape and I’m going to yell down
to the spinal cord to get with the program and decompress damn it, and
I’m going to do all that on one condition. (Katherine reaches over and
holds Stefan’s hand)

S: What would that be?

K: That you don’t stop coming to visit me.

S: I won’t. (Stefan kisses Katherine’s hand) Besides, I have to be here
to see you walk to that window. (Stefan leaves the room)

K: See ya, whoever you are.

Miranda stops by Katherine’s room the next day.

M: "Just to visit. And no lectures."
K: "You never lecture. You’re always very supportive."
M: "Yes, and obnoxiously so."
Miranda puts her coat and purse on the bed.
K: "What are friends for?"
M: "My you’re in great spirits, and is that a new haircut and a gorgeous nightgown?"
K: " I had my hairstylist make an emergency visit, a I called Wyndhams and had them send over some pretty things. I just couldn’t look at that hospital gown one more day. Aren’t you going to ask how come?"
M: "Do tell."
K: "I have had an epiphany. A complete turnaround, a reawakening."
M: "All that?"
K: "And more. Everything looks completely absolutely different to me now."
M: "And clearly better. That’s really wonderful Katherine. When did all of this happen?"
K: "Last night, or should I say in the night. Since I haven’t slept yet."
M: "Well you don’t look any worse for the wear. In fact you look fabulous."
K: "I feel so possible. I feel that I can go ahead with physical therapy, and give it all the effort I need. And just work hard to get what I want, and I want to walk again."
Miranda gives Kat a hug.
M: "Oh Katherine, I’m really happy for you." Miranda sits back down.
M: "So what made this all possible?"
K: " Not what. Who. I wasn’t up talking all night to myself."
M: " Anyone I know?"
K: "I’m not sure. I’m not sure if anybody knows him. I’m not even sure if he’s real. Yes I am."
M: "He?"
K: "He works here at night and he’s come to visit me quite a lot. We’ve developed this sort of odd friendship. Anyway he didn’t know me before I was shot, so he doesn’t haven’t any investment in the person I was before. Whoever that was and I hope I never see her again."
M: "So how did he make this miracle possible?"
K: "I’m not really sure. He’s just honest and matter of fact. So what he say’s carries a lot of weight. Not what other people said didn’t but"
M: "Oh don’t worry about that."
K: "Anyway, he just makes me feel like I want to be the best that I can be."
M: "Well I can’t argue with that. So who is he?"
Kat shrugs "I don’t know, and yet I feel like we know each other very well. Does that make any sense at all?"
M: "You’d be surprised."
K: "It’s really amazing. I’ve only known him for such a short time."
M: "Well sometimes it doesn’t take very long at all."
K: "I don’t want to know his name. Once he has a label, the mystery will be gone. He tried to tell , I stopped him. Think I’m crazy?"
M: "Hey, whatever works, and obviously this is working. I can’t tell you how great it is to see you like this."
K: "I feel like a kid. I have this incredible energy. In fact you know I think I could just get to the physical therapy appointment. Give those PT’s the shock of their lives. I’d love it if you went with me."
M: "I’d be happy to."
K: "Can you help me into the wheelchair?"
M:" Wheelchair? I thought that you’d just float over there."
Stefan arrives outside the door and fades into the background as Kat and Miranda head off to physical therapy.

Stefan comes to visit Katherine again
Scene 1

K: I use to be too tired to sleep, but after physical therapy today--

S: Physical therapy?

K: Gloating is so unattractive.

S: I agree, forgive me.

K: Well, this once you have a right. Anyway, I went, it was as awful as
I
remember it, but for the first time I felt that I was working toward
something, that window, and the day that I walked there.

S: (takes out a nicely wrapped jewelry box) This is to remind you of
your goal.

K: I, I can’t accept that, not from you.

Scene 2
S: It’s, it’s not a gift, it’s a reminder of the night we shared, the
confidences we exchanged, perhaps I shouldn’t have wrapped it.

K: Perhaps you should realize I’m not going to accept it.

S: Why not?

K: Too often in my life I have held on to a thing and not a person. I
don’t want to make that mistake with you. You have made me believe that
I could walk again, and that is the greatest gift I’ve ever received and
all I’m going to take from you. I hope you’re not offended.

S: No, disappointed. Though, I understand, will you do me a favor?

K: Anything!

S: Will you look at it? I’d like to know if it’s something you would’ve
wanted.

K: All right, I have to admit, I am curious. (opens the box and takes
out the
CRYSTAL TREE NECKLACE) My tree!

Scene 3
K: It is so perfect, where did you find it?

S: I had it made. Standing at that window with you in my arms was one
of the most profound experiences of my life, I wanted to preserve it
some how and give it to you in a way that would last.

K: You have. How did you know that once I saw I’d want to keep IT.

S: I only hoped.

K: Why is it so easy for you to make me change my mind?

S: I don’t think it is, I think you’re intuitive and gracious, but not
easily persuaded. If you have one flaw, I think it’s that you don’t
know the strength of your own heart.

K: I’m learning that, from you. Could you help me put it on?

S: Yes, I’d be honored.
(Katherine laughs, Stefan puts the necklace on and looks at it, he
almost kisses her but pulled back)

S: Let me get this. (Stefan picks up the wrapper)

K: How does it look?

S: Beautiful!

K: I’d like to see it, there’s a mirror in here that Edward gave me.
(Stefan takes the mirror out of the drawer) Thank you, (looks in the
mirror) wow, it’s beautiful. You know I have a friend, I told her about
you, I’m not certain she believes you’re real since I couldn’t tell her
your name, now I have prof, you’re real.

S: My name----

K: No, just you being here is enough, you can tell me your name when we
are standing at that window together, do you think it’ll be spring then?

S: Who knows, but that tree will be there and so will I. I have to go.

K: Thank you!

S: I’ve given you very little. (Stefan leaves)

Stefan goes to Laura’s "grave" to say goodbye.
"Have you been waiting for me Lasha?"
Stefan handles his rosary beads.
"I miss you. I have for years. Well this is different, there’s no dream now. No point to all the plans I made. No magic day when I give you back your son and the three of us live happily ever after. (he sighs.) For all my brilliant machinations my ultimate goal was a fairy tale. You and I, Nikolas happy together." Stefan kneels in the snow.
I’m sorry Lasha. For the pain I caused you. Thank you. For Nikolas, the joy of my life. And for your sake I’ve let your husband live. I’ve always despised him but I’ll let him live. Unless he provokes me. I doubt he will." Stefan touches the flowers on the grave.
"It’s over. Finally. It didn’t end the way I wanted but it’s finished. I’m still here. Does that mean I won?" Stefan is saddened.
Stefan returns to Wyndemere to see Katherine sitting on the couch. She rises and asks "Would you like to join me for a drink?" Stefan looks dazed. It’s Bobbie of course.
B: "You were expecting maybe Michelle Pfeiffer?"

After admiring her crystal tree, Katherine falls into a deep sleep and has a dream. Stefan is standing in her room.
S: "Katherine. Come see our tree, Come on."
Stefan walks to the window. Katherine smiling starts to get out of bed and suddenly falls down. Katherine looks for Stefan but he’s gone. "Where are you?" She looks at the crystal tree and repeats "Where are you?"
Audrey and an orderly come to her rescue.

Later Stefan shows up at her room.
K: "I knew you’d come. I dreamt it."
S: "You had a dream about me?"
K: "Why does that surprise you? You were standing by the window urging me to get out of bed and walk over and look at the tree. For a moment I really thought I could."
S: "I believe in the power of dreams. I think they can tell us about our deepest wishes and fears before we’re conscious of them."
K: "Do you think this one was telling me I’m really afraid of you?"
S: "I hope not. I hope it was telling you that you’re getting ready to walk again."
K: "Mind over matter. My Mama said if you don’t mind it don’t matter."
Stefan smiles (a rarity)
S: "You look lovely. How are you feeling?"
K: "Excited, optimistic even happy. Thanks to you. It must be wonderful to have such an effect on people."
Stefan flashes back to the explosion where Laura "died."
S: "I usually have the opposite effect. In fact I’m not at all who you think I am."
Katherine looks at him confused.

***Laura ‘back from the dead’ meets Bobbie on the dock at Wyndemere.

B: "You selfish bitch!" and slaps her. (Just had to throw that in.)

Back at GH Stefan and Katherine continue their conversation.
K:" I know what I see. You have shown me nothing but compassion and kindness. You helped me even when the doctors couldn’t. And even though I’m a stranger, maybe I know you better in some ways than you know yourself."
S: "I’ve always known what I wanted, how to pursue it. I didn’t always attain my goals, but I was infinitely resourceful and I didn’t mind waiting. In fact I enjoyed it. Life was like a game. The challenge, the striving. It was all exhilarating but winning was almost an afterthought. It was the pursuit that was the thrill. They say it’s the getting there that counts. The arriving. Well I’ve been in transit my whole life and I haven’t minded at all."
He turns and walks toward Katherine, who is listening attentively.
S: "It’s only recently that I’ve begun to wonder what my destination is. And it’s easy to say the graveyard. Everyone’s ultimate destination. But that’s a cynical answer. Is my only choice between the pursuit, the thrill of the chase and death? Maybe I am missing the point. Maybe the arriving is the most important. The belonging somewhere, to someone. You just described a person I don’t recognize. A man who’s capable of giving to a stranger without expecting anything in return. That’s not how I see myself. That’s not how I’ve lived."
K: "People are never one way, they’re so complicated. I know I’ve been terribly selfish in my life, but that’s not who I am."
S: "Just prior to meeting you I, I had never felt so alone. I was surrounded by darkness. There were times I didn’t know if I’d get through the night. And then I would think of you, I’d see your eyes, your smile."
Stefan sits on the bed and holds Katherine’s hand.
S: "So I would come here, to see if I was imagining these feelings. But no, they were real. And we got through the nights together. You have beautiful eyes."
K: "You know when I realized I couldn’t walk. I knew I’d go on living somehow. But in my heart, I was sure my life was over. I didn’t want to see anybody including doctors, and well meaning friends, even strangers. It took every ounce of willpower not to scream at them to get out. But a stranger showed up, I don’t know anything about him. I don’t know his name, but just his presence made me feel so calm and peaceful. How is that possible?"
S: "I don’t know. All I know is I feel the same way."
Stefan leans towards Katherine and caresses her face, nearly kissing her. He strokes her hand and gets up and kisses her forehead and silently leaves. Both outside and inside the door both Stefan and Katherine have a ‘whoa’ look on their faces. Looks like love.

Alexis finds Stefan in the graveyard.

S: "You. Everyone. I’m fed up with my life."
A: "Well that’s a sweeping statement. Maybe you could just narrow it down a bit."
S: "I feel like I’m suffocating."
A: "Stefan, that is understandable. I mean you’re obviously still grieving over Laura’ death." Stefan erupts.
S: "It’s not just about Laura. Are you listening? My whole life is dragging me down." Alexis is stunned and Stefan calms himself somewhat.
S: "Whichever way I turn there’s always someone there needing something from me. Stefan this, Mr. Cassadine that. I’m just sick of it." He turns away.
A: "Maybe you need a vacation?"
S: "You know I would really appreciate it if you would resist the urge to trivialize everything I say."
A: "You know very well that’s not what I’m doing. You that I’m very concerned about you and I don’t want you to leave. (sighs) You can’t leave. Who would be head of the family?"
S: "You’ve always been an ambitious woman. I cede the role to you."
A: "Thanks . That’s very flattering, however I don’t think it’s very practical."
S: "To hell with practicality. Maybe it’s time to do things differently."
A: "This is about Katherine Bell isn’t it? You want to run away because you’re afraid she’s going to ID you as the shooter? You can just stop me when I’m getting warm."

Back in Katherine’s room she’s admiring the crystal tree. Miranda comes in.
M: "Hi."
K: "Hi. What brings you out so early?"
M: "Actually I’m looking for Mac."
K: "I haven’t seen him, is there a problem?"
M: "No, no. It’s just you know our conversation the other day got me to thinking about who I was before my world literally blew up in my face."
K: "About all that, you know I think I need to apologize. I know from my own experience I shouldn’t go rooting around in someone’s past uninvited."
M: "No, it’s fine really. All I wanted I was wondering if Mac had some old photographs of me and I might want to look at them. You wouldn’t know if there was an old album lying around?"
K: "You know I didn’t even know you existed until I crawled in bed with you that day." Miranda laughs.
K: "But that’s not saying there’s not some pictures tucked away somewhere. I could ask Mac if you want."
M: "No I will. Maybe."
K: "You know I have to say I’m surprised. Judging from your reaction the other day, I’d think you’d want to stay away from that part of your life. Why are you so interested all of the sudden?"
Miranda notices the crystal tree and takes it from Katherine’s hand.
M: "Katherine, where in the world did you get this?"
Kat looks a little annoyed.
K: "You have a strange look on your face."
M: "I was, where did you get this?
K: "It was a gift."
M: "From your friend, the guy who visits at night?"
K: "Yes. How did you know?"
M: "Lucky guess. It’s really very beautiful. Quite unusual."
K: "Yes. A tree, sort of a private thing between us."
Kat takes the necklace back.
M: "I know a little about the work. It’s really extraordinary craftsmanship. So do you know who he is yet?"
K: "No."
M: "Well he sounds really special. I should leave and let you rest."
Miranda gathers her coat and purse and hurries out the door.
K: "Well do you want me to ask Mac about those photos?"
Miranda’s already gone.
K: "Bye." Looking confused.
