The love story of Stefan and Katherine begins with a tragedy.
Laura has faked her death and Luke and Lucky try to make things more realistic, by having Luke go to Spoon Island and threatening to kill Stefan with a gun. Lucky makes a mistake in the plan and takes the gun from Luke and tosses it into a ravine. The faked death and Luke and Lucky’s failed plan set things in motion for the tragic first meeting of Stefan Cassadine and Katherine Bell. Scene 1: After Luke and Lucky leave. Stefan retrieves the gun and returns to the sight where Luke threatened to kill him. Stefan has flashbacks of Luke’s threat and his aiming the gun at him. Katherine is off the beaten path to Wyndemere. She is trying to locate Nikolas, Stefan’s "nephew", who has a crush on the beautiful Ms. Bell. Stefan loads the cartridge into the gun. He positions himself in a shooting stance, aiming at the tree where he had stood when Luke was aiming the same gun at him. Katherine appears on the scene just as Stefan pulls the trigger. It’s too late. Katherine momentarily smiles at the stranger then her face reflects the agony as the bullet pierces her abdomen. Stefan and Katherine’s eyes meet filled with both terror and shock.

Stefan is panicked and throws the gun down. He rushes over to Katherine and places his hand on her neck to feel for a pulse. He feels the blood on Katherine’s stomach and wipes it off on his clothes. He cries out for Barbara, as a security guard arrives on the scene.
S.G.: "Mr. Cassadine . Mr. Cassadine are you ok?"
S: "Yes. This woman has been shot, I just found her."
S.G.: "Who is she? A trespasser?"
S: "Just go call the emergency code. Do it now, do it now."
S.G.: "I can’t just leave you."
S: "Do as I say, do it. Do it!" As the security guard leaves to call for help. Stefan cries out for Barbara again. She rushes to the scene.
B: "Luke, Luke. Stefan what’s the matter, what’s going on?"
S: "Here, I called the paramedics. Here. I found this woman she’s badly hurt, she’s bleeding. Look."
B: "Oh my God. It’s Katherine Bell." As she shines the flashlight on Katherine’s face.
S: "You know her?" Barbara tries to calm a panicked Stefan.
B: "Here, just hold the light. Hold it on the wound. I need to see the wound."
S: "Help her." B: "Just below the rib cage."
S: "How bad is it?"
B: "I don’t know. Normally she shouldn’t be unconscious. She must have hit her head as she went down."
S: "Who’s this Katherine Bell? Why is she here? Why would she come here?" Nikolas arrives.
S: "Nikolas where the hell have you been?"
N: "Uncle? The guard said something about…" Noticing Katherine, Nikolas rushes to her beside Stefan and Bobbie.
N: "No, no. Who did this?"
S: "You know her?" Stefan flashes back to Luke holding the gun on him, and his own shooting of Katherine.
N: "Answer me! What’s the matter with you? Who shot her?"
S: "I know less about this woman than you or Barbara. I’m assuming this was an accident." Nikolas to Barbara: "Tell me she’s going to be all right. Tell me she’s going to live."
B: "Nikolas, I don’t know. We have to get her to General Hospital. In the meantime I will do everything I can."
N: "Why is she unconscious? Why is she unconscious?"
B: "The guard is sending for the paramedics, but we do need to get her to the hospital."
N: "But she’s bleeding. You have to do something to stop the bleeding, please!"
B: "I’m trying. Don’t touch her. Don’t move her." Meanwhile Stefan looks at the gun he threw down. B: "We have to wait for the paramedics."
N: "When are they going to get here? She’s going to bleed to death before they get here!" Stefan is in a state of shock.

Katherine undergoes surgery at GH.

Later Stefan enters Katherine’s room, where she is unconscious and on oxygen. Stefan remembers the shooting. Then closes his eyes. He goes into a dreamlike state.
He turns hearing a voice. It’s Katherine. "I heard you Cassadines were territorial, wouldn’t you call this a bit excessive."

S:"I’m so sorry Ms. Bell."

K:"I should hope so."

S:"It was an accident. I was holding the gun and you surprised me. I saw your smile and your eyes. I can’t forget the way you looked at me. What were you thinking?"

K:"How serious you looked. What were you thinking?"

S:" Nothing you want to know about."

K:" I asked."

S:" Yes you did. If you must know I was entertaining a plan of revenge against an enemy."

K:" Luke Spencer."

S:" How did you know?"

K:" I just do."

S:" It went wrong all of it." As Katherine
walks around him.

S:" Laura wasn’t supposed to die." Rubbing his temple in pain.

K:" She meant a great deal to you." A moment of silence.

S:" Yes, but she always belonged to someone else. No, she belonged
to him. Luke, my nemesis. I was going to fire a shot with his gun and say he tried to kill me. It doesn’t matter now. None of it matters. The games over. The participants have all left the table in some way or another. Forgive me, I ramble."

K:" It’s all right."

S:" From the split second I pulled the trigger I saw this look in your eyes. Something pure. Something I recognized. It all happened so fast. And now you may die too."

K:" Maybe that would be best. If I died, then no one would ever know what you did. That would be best right?"

Stefan comes back to a rational state and caresses Katherine’s hair. He holds her hand as he remembers Alexis say " If Katherine dies. This is one murder Luke Spencer won’t get away with." And Katherine saying " It would be best if I died." Stefan on the verge of tears caresses her hand and says "But I don’t want you to die." Katherine opens her eyes. She looks at him and Stefan smiles. As she awakens more Stefan sits and says gently "Hello." A nurse comes in and Stefan leaves.

Stefan confides in Alexis that he shot Katherine.

Meanwhile Mac asks Katherine who is still in ICU if she remembers who shot her. She replies. "..A man. He’s looking at me."

M:" Someone you know?"

K:"I’m not sure."

M:" Can you see him? Try, what did he look like?"

Katherine can only remember that split second when she saw his eyes.

K:" He had the most incredible eyes. Wild, kind of like a cat or panther or something. I was mesmerized, I can’t move."

Mac continues to interrogate Katherine about the mans eyes. All she can add was "They were kind." Edward Q. finally kicks Mac out.
On New Years Eve. Kat now in a new room gets a visit from Lucy Coe while she’s visiting with Mac. "Mac. Kathy, I was wondering if you were up…for a little mini-visit?" Mac gives Katherine an understanding look as he says " I’ll be outside." Katherine looks at Mac as if to say ‘please don’t go’. Mac tells Lucy "Don’t stay long."

L:" Oh no, I wouldn’t want.. I won’t. I..I" nervous laugh as Mac
leaves. L:" Kathy, I just wanted to stop by and offer my deepest sympathy."

K:" Thank you. But I’m not dead yet."

L:" No. No of course your not Kathy. You’re not going to let something like this get you down..What I mean is I know you’ll just bounce out of that bed and land on both feet." Kat gives her an extremely annoyed look. "

L:" I brought you this." Hurriedly handing Kat a bookbag.

K:" What is it?" In an unimpressed tone.

L:" Uh. It’s a book. It’s Stand and Be Counted by this wonderful woman author who..a lot of self esteem. I just keep standing here and putting my foot in it don’t I?" Katherine’s eyes say yes.

L:"This isn’t going really very well is it? Uh..Mac, did you see how Mac is completely devoted to you. So no matter what happens he is going to be there right beside you. You do believe that don’t you?"

Kat just glares. Miranda rescues the moment by entering. "Hi. Oh, if three’s a crowd."

K:" No. No, Lucy can’t stay."

L:" No. I’ve really got to run..leave. Now." Lucy makes a hasty exit.

Meanwhile near the Nurses station Bobbie informs Stefan that she is attending a party at the Brownstone. Stefan feels he wouldn’t be welcome and decides to remain at the hospital until she returns.

Katherine turns on the TV news and falls into a short sleep. She sees herself enter the room in a beautiful violet gown. She hears a voice "Katherine" (It’s Stefan’s voice) Kat’s dream alter-ego:" I knew you’d come for me someday." Stefan enters and turns off the TV set. Kat awakens to see him standing next to her bedside. All dressed in black. He looks half like a priest and half like the grim reaper.

Katherine stares at Stefan awhile.
K: " I know you. You work here.

S:" Yes, I do."

K:" And you’ve been here before, in my room."

S:" Yes." He pauses. "And I should introduce myself."

K:" There’s no need. I know you’re the reason I’m here."

Stefan looks nervous (well as nervous as Stefan can look)

S:" I didn’t know you knew."

K:" I don’t know your name. But I know if you didn’t help me that night, I would have died. And thank you doesn’t seem to quite cover that."

Stefan sincerely "Oh, I don’t deserve your thanks. I’m only sorry for.."

Katherine interrupts. "No. Could you not be sorry. Could you just be matter of fact. I like that more lately. I don’t know why."

S:" well, I’m told I’m good at it. What do you remember about that night?"

K:" Right before and after the shooting is really pretty fuzzy. The doctors say that’s normal. I guess it’s good you know. Amnesia as a protective device.
Mac, my friend want’s to know everything that happened. I don’t."

S:" Well that uh, never would have occurred to me."

K:" I guess you think I’m crazy"

S:" No. I think you’re brave."

K:" It’s an act."

S:" Well it’s a good one and I’ve seen a lot. I really should introduce myself."

K:" Please don’t. I don’t want to know who you are. But I’d like you to stay."

S:" Why?"

K:" Because you didn’t know me before. You can’t expect anything from me. And when I look in your eyes, I don’t see how you’d like me to be."

S:" Why be anything but what you are?"

K:" Habit I guess. Fear. But I feel I don’t need to pretend with you."

S:" No. you don’t."

K:" Then will you stay?"

S:"Yes." Katherine closes her eyes and Stefan takes a seat at her bedside.
Song plays: ‘ You’re so lovely. Never, ever change. Keep that breathless charm. Won’t you please arrange it. ‘Cause I love you, just the way you look tonight.’

Stefan looks at his watch as Katherine sleeps. He gets up to leave to meet Barbara. He pauses and looks at the sleeping beauty before he goes.

Later Katherine daydreams about Stefan’s smiling face. She gets a visit from Miranda. Alexis warns Stefan he should keep his distance from Katherine.

Miranda holding the book Lucy gave to Katherine says "I’ve got an idea. Why don’t you throw it? C’mon give it a really good fling. I know you want to. It’ll make you feel better, so much better."

Kat thinks about it for only a moment, then takes the book and tosses it across the room almost hitting an entering nurse. The nurse doesn’t look to happy about it, but the two friends do a bad job of hiding their laughter. Later Stefan looks through the hospital room window, as Katherine opens her eyes and sees him. She gives him a smile which he returns. Some major flirting going on:)
