Steve Tries To Push Kayla Away

(So That She'll Marry Jack--Who Is His Brother, Billy)

Background:
Steve is trying to push Kayla away so that she'll give Jack
a chance at a relationship with her--and a will to live
(Jack is dying of cancer). Kayla doesn't know that Jack is Steve's
brother, Billy, and doesn't understand why Steve is rejecting her
just when it seemed like he was about to ask her to marry him.

Steve's suddenly become cold and distant with Kayla, and she doesn't understand why

Steve tries to play it off, like it's nothing

He tells Kayla that he meant more to her than she meant to him

He thought she was beautiful and he wanted her.

He was just using her for company. Like a sailor on shoreleave.

Kayla is shocked by what Steve says and doesn't believe him, at first

The more cruel he becomes, the more disgusted she gets

She screams at him that she knows it's not true

Kayla slugs Steve...

3 times

Steve grabs Kayla's face

Steve can't stand hurting Kayla. He breaks down...

And kisses her passionately

Steve and Kayla make love

Steve wakes up and recites the words of "The Rose" (which Kayla had written in the Christmas gift she gave him)...

As Kayla sleeps soundly in his arms

Steve holds on tightly to Kayla

Steve knows he is going to have to let her go, but he can't bear it

Kayla is blissful when she wakes up

She knows Steve didn't mean the things he'd said to her.

Kayla tries to get Steve to talk about what happened....

Steve gets out of bed, and tells her he doesn't like hurting her, or being cruel. He doesn't want them to hate each other.

He just decided that they weren't right for each other. Kayla wanted a commitment, and he isn't the marrying kind.

Kayla realizes that nothing has changed

Steve continues to push her away.

He leaves his apartment

Outside he clutches the pool stick--a gift from Kayla...

And cries.
