Kayla comes home from shopping and
tells Steve she left Benji  to spend the night at his grandpa's house.

Steve is shocked (Kayla had resisted allowing Benji to see much of Orion). Steve wonders if pod people or aliens took over Kayla's body while she was shopping.

Kayla says it's a New Year and she wants to be happy. If Benji wants to spend time with Orion, she won't get in the way of that.

Steve asks Kayla what she bought and she says she just bought groceries, pillows and sheets. While Kayla is changing shoes upstairs, Steve finds baby clothes in one of her shopping bags.

He jumps to conclusions and decides that Kayla's new attitude about Benji, and the baby clothes in her bags must mean that Kayla is pregnant.

When Kayla comes back downstairs, Steve tries to figure out if his suspicions are correct. He listens as Kayla tells him that she bought his favorite salty potato chips because she woke up in the middle of the night craving them.

The more Kayla says, the more Steve is convinced she is pregnant.

She bought a new gourmet ice cream...blueberry bubblegum and it's pink and blue.

Kayla tells Steve to try some, but he says he isn't hungry. Kayla is surprised at his  jumpy reaction.

Steve says he likes it how it is, just the two of them...Kayla thinks he is acting strangely. "What is the matter with you?" she asks.

"Nothing...how are you?"

Kayla: "I'm fine...."
Steve: "Are you sure?
Kayla: "I'm not sick..."
Steve: "I think I'm feeling a bit sick myself though...."
(Kayla is almost relieved to hear him say that, and walks him over to the couch)

She feels his forehead to see if he has a temperature (he doesn't feel warm). Kayla: Are you hot?
Steve: No I'm not hot, I'm as cool as a pickle...I mean a cucumber, cool as a cucumber.

As she does this, Steve puts his hand on her stomach.

Kayla asks: "What are you doing?"

Kayla: "You're not sick, but I think maybe you should lie down for a while..."

Kayla: "You know, I'm sorry you don't feel well. I had this really special dinner planned for us tonight. I had something special I wanted to tell you."

Steve: Really? I think I know what you wanted to tell me.

Kayla wonders how Steve could know her surprise. She thinks that he is acting weird.
Kayla: I don't know how I'm going to tell you this
Steve: Just get it out, just go ahead..just say it...
Kayla: I think your patch is on too tight.

Kayla says she bought lobsters for their dinner, but is starting to have second thoughts about letting Steve near any sharp objects.

She names the lobsters Charlie and Jose

She mentions a surprise she has for Steve, that she is saving for after dinner when he is full and happy, and can be proud of her.

Steve wants to know the surprise now, but Kayla wants to save it for later.

Kayla watches as Steve leaves the  loft  with her coat. He is going for a walk, for fresh air.

Steve assures Kayla that he isn't walking out on her, he will be back, he won't let her go through this on her own.

Kayla's confused.
"Oh good, because I don't think I could go through this on my own..."

"I couldn't eat two lobsters on my own, that's for sure"

Steve is in the elevator, panic stricken.

On the docks, he runs into Marcus and tells him Kayla is pregnant. Marcus is thrilled for Steve...but Steve doesn't think he is cut out to be a good father. Marcus disagrees and takes him for a ride to the hospital, to prove his point.

Marcus arranges for Steve to hold a newborn baby at the hospital.

Steve listens as Marcus reminds him of their life at the orphanage...

He reminds him that all a child wants is for a parent to love them

Steve isn't  sure that love is all a child needs.

Steve returns home.
("Pretty Woman" is playing. ) 

Steve wants to talk. He says he knows why Kayla did all of this (arranging a special dinner). Kayla wonders how he could know...He says he found "the stuff"

(Kayla is obviously confused).She wonders what stuff he is talking about. Steve says he found the baby clothes. "Oh...right...So?"

Steve is surprised to see Kayla act so nonchalantly. "What do you mean, so?"
Steve thinks Kayla is playing games with him.

Steve decides to come right out and say it..."You're pregnant!"

She tells him she's not pregnant.

The baby clothes were her for her friend Carrie's baby shower.

The surprise she had for Steve is that she has decided to let Benji go and live with his grandfather. Steve thinks it will make Benji happy to know he doesn't have to choose between living with them and living with his grandpa.

Kayla asks Steve about having children. He seemed so happy to hear that she wasn't pregnant. She thought they both wanted children...

Steve says he loves Kayla and wants to make her happy. She says,
"I look at you sometimes and I love you so much that I feel  thatI don't have room inside for all that love..."

Steve:"I feel the same way..."

Kayla: Don't you want to do something with it? Don't you want to give it someone? That's what having children is all about...

Steve says he wants to have kids, but doesn't think it's the right time. Kayla wonders how they will know when it is the right time. She listens as he says, he has to be as sure about it as he is about their relationship and their love.

"If I'm going to be a father, I don't want to just  be a father I want to be a good father, I want to be a great father.  That's what you deserve, that's what our kids deserve...I want them to look up to me, I want them not to have to look around and see how things are in other people's houses. I want them to be happy with me. Do you understand? If we have kids, I can't let them down."

Steve and Kayla decide not to talk about it anymore for now, they want to enjoy their nice evening.

Steve: "So, what should we talk about?"
Kayla: Well...we can talk about us...all four of us.
