Steve and Kayla-
Christmas 1986

Hope and Kayla are on the docks.
Kayla talks to Hope about Steve.
She is upset that Steve didn't want
to spend Christmas with her.

She doesn't understand why Steve
acts like a jerk sometimes, if he
really cares about her. Hope tells Kayla
that Steve 's been hurt so many ways, he is probably afraid of being vulnerable again.

Santa comes to give presents to the kids on the docks.

Kayla watches 'Santa' and then says to Hope: "What a sweetheart...why can't I
find a guy like that?"

Santa turns around...

...and Hope and Kayla realize who this
Santa really is

Kayla tells Hope this just makes her angrier. Now she is upset that Steve couldn't be honest with her and tell her what he was really doing...she is tired of getting hurt.

Hope tells Kayla that Steve isn't easy,
but if Kayla  wants him, its going to take some work. Kayla has to decide for herself if Steve is worth it.

Kayla's still upset with Steve...

...and confronts him later, at 'The Cheatin' Heart'

"Why do you  do this, why do you insist on hiding this side of you, the sweet side, that makes me care about you?"

"Maybe that's why I ..hide it from you"

Max and Frankie interrupt them from kissing. Kayla has to leave for Christmas with her family, but Steve declines an invitation.

Later, Steve meets up with Kayla in the park, and gives her a gift- a beautiful jeweled necklace.

Steve pretends he got it off a toy
vending machine, but Kayla knows better.

Steve helps Kayla put it on.

Kayla loves it.

Later, Kayla comes by with
a present for Steve.

Steve says now he has to break down and get his hotplate fixed...but Kayla tells him it's an open invitation to come over to her place to cook. He thanks her...

She responds with an imitation of Steve..."Ah dude, it was no big deal. I saw it in the trash can and I thought...can't let that go to waste...

...Go ahead, read what I wrote sweetness."

Steve laughs opens the cookbook...

and reads the poem Kayla dedicated on the front page--words to "The Rose"

Steve is moved.
